Uncommon primary pelvic retroperitoneal masses in adults: a pattern-based imaging approach.
نویسندگان
چکیده
There is a broad spectrum of primary pelvic retroperitoneal masses in adults that demonstrate characteristic epidemiologic and histopathologic features and natural histories. These masses may be classified into five distinct subgroups using a pattern-based approach that takes anatomic distribution and certain imaging characteristics into account, allowing greater accuracy in their detection and characterization and helping to optimize patient management. The five groups are cystic (serous and mucinous epithelial neoplasms, pelvic lymphangioma, tailgut cyst, ancient schwannoma), vascular or hypervascular (solitary fibrous tumor, paraganglioma, pelvic arteriovenous malformation, Klippel-Trénaunay-Weber syndrome, extraintestinal GIST [gastrointestinal stromal tumor]), fat-containing (lipoma, liposarcoma, myelolipoma, presacral teratoma), calcified (calcified lymphocele, calcified rejected transplant kidney, rare sarcomas), and myxoid (schwannoma, plexiform neurofibroma, myxoma).Cross-sectional imaging modalities help differentiate the more common gynecologic neoplasms from more unusual masses. In particular, the tissue-specific multiplanar capability of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging permits better tumor localization and internal characterization, thereby serving as a road map for surgery.

MR imaging of pelvic extraperitoneal masses: A diagnostic approach.
Pelvic extraperitoneal pelvic masses are relatively uncommon conditions and generally raise diagnostic imaging challenges. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis of these masses due to its unique tissue-specific multiplanar capabilities that allow optimal pelvic mass localization and internal characterization. This article reviews the MR imaging presentation of ex...
متن کاملPrimary Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Urinary Bladder with Signet-Ring Cells: Description of an Uncommon Case and Critical Points in Its Management
We present an uncommon case of mucinous adenocarcinoma of the bladder (MAB) with signet-ring cells extensively infiltrating prostate gland and pelvic/retroperitoneal lymph node stations and not responsive to usual systemic chemotherapy regimens. This case highlights the important features of MAB including the pattern of tumor spread, the tendency for initial misdiagnosis, and the importance of ...
متن کاملSolid malignant retroperitoneal masses—a pictorial review
Primary retroperitoneal masses are a rare but important group of neoplasms. Cross-sectional imaging has revolutionised the investigation of patients with retroperitoneal neoplasms. Both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can contribute to tumour diagnosis, though histological confirmation is often required because of the considerable overlap of imaging features. Cross...

متن کاملLaparoscopic Ablation of a Pelvic Retroperitoneal Epidermoid Cyst
Experience with minimally invasive approaches, such as laparoscopic ablation and transanal endoscopic microsurgery, to resection pelvic retroperitoneal and presacral tumors is limited. Masses arising from this anatomic position are usually removed using a transsacral approach or laparotomy. We report a detailed description of the laparoscopic procedure performed in a 32-year-old woman to remove...
